Therapy Myths Debunked: What You Need to Know

In our communities, therapy hasn’t always been seen as normal or necessary. Some of us grew up hearing things like “we don’t air our business” or “you just gotta stay strong.” While those sayings come from survival, they can keep us from healing.

Let’s break down some of the most common myths about therapy—because the truth is, mental health care is for us too.

Myth #1: Therapy Is Only for “Crazy” People

The truth: Therapy is for anyone who’s struggling, healing, growing, or just trying to make sense of life. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to get support. It’s like going to the doctor—you don’t wait until it’s critical to check in.

Myth #2: Black People Don’t Do Therapy

The truth: We absolutely do—and more of us are showing up for ourselves than ever before. From celebrities to your neighbor down the street, people are choosing therapy as a form of self-care and resistance. Mental health is not just a “white people thing.”

Myth #3: What Happens in This House Stays in This House

The truth: Keeping everything inside hasn’t protected us—it’s passed down unhealed pain. Therapy gives you space to unpack things without judgment or gossip. What you say in therapy stays in therapy (unless safety is a concern).

Myth #4: I Can Just Talk to My Friends or Pray About It

The truth: Friends are great. Prayer is powerful. But sometimes you need someone trained to help you work through deep emotions, trauma, or unhealthy patterns. Therapy doesn’t replace faith—it can work alongside it.

Myth #5: Therapists Just Tell You What to Do

The truth: A good therapist won’t boss you around or hand out advice like a parent. Instead, they help you understand yourself, explore options, and make choices that feel right for you. You stay in the driver’s seat.

Myth #6: Therapy Takes Forever

The truth: Therapy doesn’t have to last forever. Many people go for a few months, depending on what they’re working through. It’s flexible. It can be short-term, long-term, or somewhere in between. You get to decide what works.

Myth #7: It’s Too Expensive

The truth: Yes, therapy is an investment—but your peace is priceless. Many therapists offer sliding scales, accept insurance, or can refer you to lower-cost options. Don’t count yourself out before exploring what’s available.

Myth #8: I Don’t Want to Be Judged

The truth: A culturally-sensitive therapist creates a space where you can be yourself without shame or judgment. You don’t have to explain your tone, your culture, or your trauma. You deserve to be seen and understood.

Final Word

Therapy isn’t a last resort. It’s not weakness. It’s not betrayal of your family, culture, or faith. It’s a bold move toward freedom, healing, and generational change.

If you’ve been holding back because of what people might say or think, let this be your sign: it’s okay to choose yourself. There’s strength in vulnerability. There’s power in healing.

Signed,

Still tired. Still trying....
